If you want to really make progress it needs to be a very strong alliance or at least have one or two of the strongest players on your server in it.
If you are not in such an alliance, the big ones will always pounce on you any time you are not very careful. You need to be prepared to spend many hours a day in the game to make any real progress. The other major problem with the game is that they release app updates frequently and many times the updates are riddled with bugs.
Numerous times I have been unable to connect to my account after installing an update.
